  2. (1877-1944), an army officer who seized
  3. control of the government 1921 and was
  4. proclaimed shah 1925. During World War II,
  5. Britain and the USSR were nervous of his
  6. German sympathies and occupied Iran 1941-46.
  7. They compelled him to abdicate 1941 in favour
  8. of his son Muhammad Riza Shah Pahlavi, who
  9. took office in 1956, with US support, and who
  10. was deposed in the Islamic revolution 1979.
